Catch-22

The aim of this lesson plan is to foster active reading by evaluating the actions and statements of characters in a novel and by applying these ideas to other contexts. Students will learn how "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller dramatizes a fictional instance of "saying no" to authority, especially in anti-war activism. They will be asked to research other historical examples of individuals to fought against oppressive systems (e.g. Gandhi, Mandela, etc..). Then they will compare them with the character of Yossarian in a written essay. There is a vocabulary section with recorded pronunciations.
