Halley's comet
In the 18th century, Isaac Newton stated that comets, just like planets, move around the Sun. He stated that the orbits of comets were elliptical and much more eccentric than the orbits of planets. Newton's ideas made it possible for Edmund Halley to declare in 1707 that the comets that had passed by in 1531, 1607 and 1682 were all the same comet.
